Omu-Rice

Omu rice is a Japanese dish which is essentially fried rice wrapped in an omelet. It`s an incredibly popular dish in Japan and won`t usually cost you your life’s savings like some of the other food I`ve seen in restaurants here. The former company I worked for went Bankrupt and so during my time of unemployment, I was forced to eat on a strict budget; different variations of omurice to stop myself from going mad from an impending overdose on rice.
For this recipe I`ve chosen a strictly budget style approach depicting my days of skimming, but if you wanted to add other ingredients like meat to the rice, by all means indulge. In the picture above I used minced beef, which hasn`t been included in the recipe below because it`s a picture I had handy at the time I wrote this post.
Ingredients
- 4 eggs
- 2 cups of rice
- 1/2 onion
- 1 carrot
- Green peas
- Mayonnaise
- Tomato sauce
- Salt and pepper
Method
- Wash and cook the rice. While the rice is cooking, dice and boil the carrot till soft. Also cut and fry the onion in a frying pan.
- When cooked, place the rice into the frying pan along with the onion. Add the peas, a little salt and pepper, tomato sauce and mix everything together using a wooden spoon. Add enough sauce so all the rice turns slightly red in color. Cook for about 5 minutes on medium heat, stirring occasionally to prevent the rice from burning. Remove the rice from the frying pan and place on a separate plate.
- In a small bowl, crack and beat 2 eggs. Add and mix in a little mayonnaise and pour into the frying pan using a circular motion starting from the center, working your way closer to the outer edge. Quickly stir the egg again in a circular motion till the egg is almost cooked but still a little runny (as shown)
- Turn the heat off and gently slide the egg onto a plate and place half the rice on top in the center. Wrap the edges together and squeeze a little tomato sauce on top.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 and garnish with parsley or salad. Serves 2.
